A new Dalai Lama is considered to be the reincarnation of the previous Dalai Lama. Historically, when a Dalai Lama died, senior lamas (Buddhist spiritual leaders) worked in consultation with the Tibetan government to search for and recognise the reincarnated Dalai Lama through a series of sacred tests. A living Dalai Lama may publicly specify characteristics of their successor to assist with this process once they die. The current Dalai Lama (the 14th Dalai Lama) is 90 years old. In 2007, the CCP enshrined in Chinese law that his successor will be born inside China, and identified and approved by the Chinese government. In July of 2025, the 14th Dalai Lama publicly stated that he would reincarnate outside China and that his reincarnation would be identified by Buddhist leaders.

In New Zealand, the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) model provides publicly funded compensation to individuals who suffer personal injury, regardless of fault. This system prohibits most personal injury lawsuits, in favour of a no-fault scheme where injured individuals receive financial support, treatment, and rehabilitation without needing to pursue legal action. By contrast, a free litigation model allows individuals to sue for compensation through civil courts, with compensation determined by legal arguments and fault-based rulings.
